Joining Forces to Help Ukrainian Refugees Battle Cancer

The Blue Heron Foundation's Cancer Care Program met the urgent humanitarian need at the front lines of one of the world’s most severe crises.

As Director of Cancer Care Programs at the Blue Heron Founndation, I led a humanitarian response to help Ukrainian cancer patients access life-saving care.

The program fostered collaboration with multiple organizations including the Institute of Oncology in Moldova, the UN Migration Agency (IOM), the Union for International Cancer Control, St-Jude's Global, Inspiration Family, Mission Kharkiv, Medicai, and many Romanian and Moldovan oncologists who were ready to help refugees at a moment's notice.

Our work has been reported in leading scientific journals including the European Journal of Cancer, the Lancet Oncology, and featured on eCancer and the Global Coalition for Radiotherapy.

“I'm Natalia, I have cancer but I can't have treatment in my city. A few days ago, Russia bombed Dnipro and killed 44 civilians. Most of the time there is no electricity and hospitals can't work. My daughter and I talked to doctor Horia Vulpe about leaving Ukraine and continuing my treatments in Romania. He is a highly qualified specialist in oncology and organized our.

I'm also grateful to Ms. Stefania, the founder of Blue Heron Foundation and the whole team including Luidmila, Cristi, and Valentin . Now I am undergoing cancer treatments in Cluj-Napoca, Romania with Dr. Gabriel Kacso. Thank you, Blue Heron Foundation. The help you are providing Ukrainian patients is priceless during the war.”
